A Highlands Wedding Venue and Scottish Traditions

If you are recently engaged, congratulations! Now the planning begins. And one of the first things you’ll want to do is find somewhere to hold your nuptials. Thankfully, we can help. Bearnock offers a perfect Highlands wedding venue. One of the reasons people choose to have a wedding in Scotland is because of the beautiful traditions they can incorporate. Read on to discover some of our favourite ways to hold a ‘Scottish’ wedding!

A Highlands Wedding Venue and Scottish Traditions

Men in Kilts:

While it’s true that there is much more to Scottish wedding traditions than men in kilts, it also wouldn’t be a Scottish wedding without this dress code! Traditionally the groom and groomsmen all wear kilts of the same tartan. The bride will sometimes incorporate the tartan into her wedding dress (often in the form of a sash) or bouquet. Even if you don’t have Scottish heritage, the locals love to see you embrace their wedding attire traditions. For kilt hire, we recommend Scotkilt in Inverness.

A Piper:

A Piper at our Highlands Wedding Venue

It wouldn’t be a Scottish wedding without a fabulous piper playing at your Highlands wedding venue; the sound of bagpipes in Scotland symbolises the beginning of something extraordinary. Your piper will undoubtedly wear a traditional Scottish kilt outfit, and he will usually pipe you in and out of your ceremony, into your reception and when you cut your cake. Please take a look at our Weddings Page for a selection of pipers.

The Cake:

Now on the subject of the cake, a traditional Scottish wedding cake is usually a delicious brandy-soaked fruit cake.

The Bouquet:

As well as incorporating some tartan ribbons into her bouquet, the bride might also include a sprig of white heather for good luck!

Drinking from the Quaich:

This two-handled ‘loving cup’ is generally filled with whisky. The newlyweds use it for their first toast together as a married couple.

Tying the Knot:

While we now recognise this phrase as a colloquialism for getting married, its roots are set in Scottish wedding traditions. Handfasting (or tying the knot) is the ancient Celtic ritual of binding hands together to symbolise the union of two lives.

We offer several wedding packages at Bearnock Lodge, a perfect Highlands wedding venue. With each of those packages, we apply the rental cost of the house separately. Find out more HERE.

“Just returned after a long weekend! It is AMAZING. Decor, location, surroundings are all stunning. 8 adults 4 kids did not see kids there had their own space as did the adults. Gathering together in the evening lighting the fire was the highlight of the day! “
